Equinox Times

March 20th marks an equinox, a day when the sun is directly over the earth's equator, producing equal amounts of day and night all over the world. In the northern hemisphere, the day is a vernal equinox, signaling the start of spring, and in the southern hemisphere, it's an autumnal equinox, signaling the start of fall. People have celebrated the March equinox, a time of transition and new beginnings, for centuries.

Here at Bruker, we kick off the year with a whole series of articles on applications for the S2 PUMA. This energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) spectrometer now comes with a 21 CFR Part 11-compliant software package, enabling users to integrate the instrument seamlessly into pharmaceutical laboratories for process and quality control.

We also welcome readers of Bruker Micro-CT Academy news. Going forward, X-ray microtomography applications will be an integral part of FIRST Newsletter.

We look forward to providing you with more unique FIRST insights into materials. Happy spring or fall, wherever you might be!

S2 PUMA - Fast and Reliable Analysis of Iron Ore as Pressed Pellets by EDXRF

Iron ore is an important commodity due to its high demand in the steel industry. Monitoring the chemical composition of iron ores helps optimize both the mining process and the melt furnace feed process during steel production. This lab report describes how S2 PUMA EDXRF spectrometry allows fast and simple control of the mining process through the measurement of major and minor elements in iron ore.

SC-XRD - Roundup of ACA Meeting 2016

The American Crystallographic Association's (ACA) annual meeting was held in Denver, Colorado in 2016, and Bruker was again a proud sponsor. The event brings together scientists from a wide range of backgrounds, all interested in cutting edge research techniques. Bruker exhibited the PHOTON II and IuS 3.0 in the D8 QUEST and D8 VENTURE, as well as a dual port D8 VENTURE METALJET with combined protein crystallography and biological SAXS. Keep reading to get the full lowdown!

S2 PUMA - Limestone: Fast, Accurate, and Precise Analysis of CaO, MgO, Fe2O3 and Other Main Components

This lab report demonstrates the analytical performance of the S2 PUMA benchtop spectrometer for the analysis of limestone. Limestone is made up of high concentrations of CaO and MgO, and low concentrations of impurities like Fe2O3. Used in diverse applications ranging from building materials to pharmaceuticals and food, limestone processing must be controlled to ensure product quality.

S8 TIGER - Quick Analysis of Ladle Metallurgical Furnace (LMF) Slags

The 1-kW S8 TIGER WDXRF spectrometer with TouchControl is the perfect analytical tool for steel plants wanting to control slag and other process-related materials. Slag is a byproduct of ore smelting and steel refining. Its composition is closely controlled to achieve better metal purity, cleanliness, and physical properties. As shown in this lab report, the 1-kW S8 TIGER's performance, quality, robustness and ease-of-use are perfectly matched for the demanding application of ladle slag analysis.

S2 PUMA - Fast and Reliable Elemental Analysis of Barite (BaSO4) as Pressed Pellets by EDXRF

As described in this lab report, the S2 PUMA achieves highly accurate and precise analysis of barite. Due to its white color, chemical inertness and high density, barite finds applications as paint fillers, anti-wetting agents, and automobile coatings. Barite with lower concentrations of impurities, such as iron, lead to whiter and brighter end products. Monitoring and controlling such elements is therefore critical to the processing of barite as an industrial mineral.

Q4 MOBILE - Prevent the Wrong Alloy From Causing Environmental Disaster

Bruker's Q4 MOBILE optical emission spectrometer provides the petrochemical and metals industries with a compact, mobile metal analyzer, capable of analyzing the carbon concentration in steel parts. Even the smallest ppm-level changes in carbon concentration can impact the steel's durability, strength and weldability. That's where the Q4 MOBILE proves its mettle: right at the scene of a part. C, S or N determination, as well as alloy identification, is done rapidly wherever it is needed.

S2 PUMA - Analysis of High- and Low-Si Aluminum

Aluminum is one of the most widely used metals because of its low specific weight, corrosion resistance, and high conductivity. It is usually alloyed with silicon or magnesium to yield higher strengths. Impurities such as iron, however, reduce the metal's ductility and machinability. The S2 PUMA with XY Autochanger is particularly well suited for this quality control application. This lab report explains why.
