Non-Destructive Provenance Studies on Ceramics Using X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometry
This article looks at provenance studies of ceramics using two different portable X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometers: the tripod-mounted ARTAX and the handheld Tracer III-V. Eleven artifact fragments, or sherds, from Mexico and Guatemala were analyzed for pigment elements Rb, Sr, Y, Zr and Nb, and the results grouped to show the sherds' regional origins. Read more

Steel Cleanliness Analysis Using SEM and EDS
One way to measure the grade and cleanliness of steel according to standard is the Bruker QUANTAX STEEL solution, an SEM-based solution that utilizes a QUANTAX 400 EDS system with additional software to perform a fully automated analysis of the steel. The ability to run unattended measurements of not only inclusion morphology, but also chemical composition, allows producers to provide more accurate specification of their steels, as well as providing better quality control.

Real-Life Photo Journal -- Adventure in the Field
Bruker handheld XRF analyzers are often used in very diverse environments -- ranging from an office or classroom to scrap yards, refineries and mines. Getting real-life applications pictures can be quite a challenge. In this photo journal, Jerry, Michelle and Gary of Bruker Elemental in Kennewick, Washington, journey to Lane Griffin's Lone Jack mine in the Cascade Mountains of northwestern Washington state. Their pictures tell a story of hardship and peril, all in the name of a great day's work.

Resolution and Coverage of 2D X-ray Detectors
Selection of a 2D detector is critical for the performance of a two-dimensional X-ray diffractometer. In addition to sensitivity, dynamic range, and background noise, the detector’s geometry features, such as active area, pixel size, and number of pixels are very important considerations. This in-depth article describes the parameters affecting the angular coverage and resolution of 2D detectors, and demystifies comparative features such as FWHM and Megapixel.
