Leading the Way in Pharmaceutical Science

Analytical X-ray techniques play a pivotal role in advancing the field of pharmaceutical science and industry, offering a range of powerful tools for characterizing and studying various aspects of pharmaceutical compounds and formulations, all along the value chain: from drug discovery to development to manufacturing. Among the notable analytical instruments in this domain, the Bruker AXS SC-XRD (Single Crystal X-Ray Diffraction), XRD (X-Ray Diffraction), XRF (X-Ray Fluorescence), and XRM (X-Ray Microscopy) systems, along with LabScape support solutions, have become indispensable for researchers and professionals in the pharmaceutical sector. These sophisticated instruments enable a comprehensive understanding of pharmaceutical materials, ensuring quality control, structural analysis, and formulation optimization.

Single Crystal X-Ray Diffraction (SC-XRD) has emerged as an invaluable tool for determining the precise atomic arrangement within crystalline pharmaceutical compounds. This technique provides insights into crystal structures, helping researchers understand the three-dimensional arrangement of atoms and molecules. By revealing the arrangement of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) within a crystal lattice, SC-XRD aids in optimizing drug formulation and assessing the stability of pharmaceuticals.

X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) is a widely utilized technique in pharmaceutical science, allowing for the analysis of powdered and crystalline materials. XRD is instrumental in identifying crystalline phases, quantifying amorphous content, and characterizing polymorphs, which is crucial for ensuring the quality, efficacy, and safety of pharmaceutical products. It plays a vital role in batch-to-batch consistency and formulation development, ultimately influencing drug performance.

X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy offers a non-destructive method for the elemental analysis of pharmaceutical samples. It is a valuable tool for assessing the composition and purity of raw materials, excipients, and finished pharmaceutical products. XRF enables pharmaceutical scientists to verify that products meet regulatory standards and to identify trace contaminants or impurities, which can be critical for patient safety and product quality.

X-Ray Microscopy (XRM) provides a means to investigate the 3D internal structures of pharmaceutical materials at a microscopic scale. This technique is instrumental in studying the morphology, porosity, and distribution of components within drug formulations, including tablets, capsules, and powders. By visualizing microstructural features, XRM helps optimize drug delivery systems and improve the bioavailability of pharmaceuticals.

Production and Quality Control of Silicone-Coated Release Liners with XRF

Silicone is a widely used release coating material. Silicone coatings offer several desirable performance characteristics for different applications, like improved resistance to slip, moisture, and abrasion. Production of silicone-coated paper, cardboard, and thin film requires a fast and accurate analytical technique for process and quality control. The primary quality requirements for the coated materials are the thickness, purity, stability, and homogeneity of the silicone layer. In this Lab Report, you will learn what our Energy-Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) spectrometer, the S2 PUMA Series 2, can do for you.

D6 PHASER for Residual Stress Analysis

Residual stress is the localized stress that remains in a material after it has undergone processes such as welding, casting, forming, machining, or thin-film deposition. The analysis of residual stresses is important to understand how these stresses affect the performance and lifetime of a component. Additionally, residual stress can be used to identify specific material properties and failure mechanisms, which can then be used in the design of components and parts. Our new benchtop diffractometer, the D6 PHASER, is uniquely suited for such materials research and characterization. In this application report, we present the capabilities of the system in a reflection diffraction configuration for residual stress analysis of a 200-nm layer of tungsten created by physical vapor deposition (PVD) under Ar atmosphere versus Kr atmosphere.

Argon Detection in Powder Metallurgy Hot Isostatic Pressing Products – New ISO 5842 Standard

Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) is a process that simultaneously uses high pressure and temperature to improve a material's mechanical properties and workability by reducing the porosity and increasing the density. HIP is applied to many materials, including metal alloys and ceramics. The HIP process is used as a post-printing step for high-quality additive manufactured parts, but also to build a wide variety of components directly, by a near-net-shape powder metallurgic process (PM-HIP). The material produced by PM-HIP is corrosion-resistant and withstands high pressure. This article describes problems that can arise when argon is used as a pressure medium, a new ISO 5842 standard for argon detection, and the G8 GALILEO MS, the only commercially available instrument for measuring argon that's compliant with ISO 5842.
