This course is designed for new users of the Bruker D8 QUEST or D8 VENTURE systems for X-ray crystal structure determination (chemical crystallography). The course includes instruction and lab time. The training is in English, so participants should have strong English skills.
The course fee is $1,980 USD per person.
Because our courses are interactive and learner-oriented, we limit class size to a minimum of three and a maximum of six. Early enrollment is encouraged as registrations are accepted on a first-come/first-serve basis.
**Each participant will be provided with class materials and lunch daily. We have computers on-site, but it is encouraged to bring a laptop. It is highly recommended to fly into Madison (MSN) on Sunday afternoon/evening and fly out late Wednesday evening or Thursday morning to be able to attend the full course.
This course runs 9am-5pm, Monday - Wednesday and covers the following:
Introduction to single crystal diffraction (crystal systems, space groups, X-ray diffraction theory)
Overview of instrument hardware and software
Techniques for selection and mounting of specimens for X-ray analysis
Discussion of data collection techniques and strategies
Hands-on use of a Bruker D8 series system for routine structure determinations
Instruction and practice with APEX3 software package, including
Data integration and analysis techniques using APEX3
Structure determination and refinement - use of SHELXTL software package
Use of Cambridge Crystallographic Database
preparation of final reports, tables, diagrams and CIF files
Students are encouraged to bring his/her own samples and problem data
