Head in the Game

With American football season well underway, team Bruker is proud to introduce its own line-up of new, winning instruments on the X-ray diffraction (XRD) playing field!

D2 PHASER with LYNXEYE XE-T: XRD for Everyone, Everywhere and Everything

The world’s best benchtop XRD solution, the D2 PHASER, is now available with the world’s best linear detector, the LYNXEYE XE-T. Already well known for ease-of-use, portability and high data quality, the analytical capability of the D2 PHASER can now be further extended with the unmatched intrinsic energy resolution of the LYNXEYE XE-T detector. With four times the energy resolution of traditional linear detector technology, the LYNXEYE XE-T eliminates the need for artifact-inducing K-Beta filters and inefficient secondary monochromators, resulting in increased signal and a dramatic reduction in background, leading to increased sample throughput, lower limits of detection and superior fitting results.

EIGER2 R 500K for the D8 Family of XRD Solutions

Equipped with an advanced sensor, ergonomic design and solution-level integration, the EIGER2 R 500K detector brings next generation multi-mode x-ray detection to the D8 ADVANCE and D8 DISCOVER family of XRD solutions. A monolithic sensor design with over 500,000 perfectly sized pixels, combined with an ultra-fast custom ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) results in an ideal detector for every type of measurement. The EIGER2 is the perfect match for a wide range of materials research applications, including absorber-free rocking curves and reflectometry measurements of films, rapid phase identification and quantification of powders, and advanced measurement planning and analysis routines using native 2D algorithms for texture and residual stress.

D8 DISCOVER Plus with ATLAS Goniometer and High Efficiency Turbo X-ray Source

The D8 DISCOVER has a history of pushing the boundaries of laboratory analytical x-ray instrumentation. D8 DISCOVER Plus represents the next evolution in raising the bar for top-of-the-line diffraction solutions. Building on the heritage of the traditional D8 goniometer, ATLAS takes precision to a new level while supporting the next generation of source technologies. The High Efficiency Turbo X-ray Source (TXS-HE) features a compact housing designed to tightly couple its extremely high-intensity X-ray beam with the primary optic for maximum photon capture while minimizing signal loss due to air scatter and downtime for maintenance. The capabilities of the D8 DISCOVER Plus can be further extended with the full line of D8 family optics, sample stages, and detectors, including the newly released EIGER2 R 500K.

"XE-T! EIGER2! ATLAS! Hut! Hut!" Go team, go!

Fast Crystal Domain Screening Using the Energy Dispersive Laue Mapping Technique

The M4 TORNADO is a spatially resolving, energy dispersive X-ray fluourescence (XRF) spectrometer. It was developed for high-speed 2D elemental analysis and visualization. This lab report describes a new approach, energy dispersive Laue mapping (EDLM), where diffraction peaks, providing information about crystal orientation, are used to identify grain and twin boundaries in crystalline materials.

IUCr Participants Impressed by New Bruker AXS Products

Bruker and Incoatec's Charminar-style booth at the 24th International Union of Crystallography (IUCr) 2017 in Hyderabad, India, was the perfect place to show off our latest innovations for single crystal XRD. Comprising the new D8 VENTURE BIOTOOLS system, our IμS DIAMOND X-ray source, PHOTON III detector, and SCOUT sample-exchange robot were the hit of the conference.

Lung and Heart Cyclical Imaging, Simplified

Movement during a micro computed tomography (microCT) scan can lead to artefacts that degrade image quality. Imaging of breathing lungs and the beating heart in live mice under anesthesia, however, is a special case where the motion cycle itself is the object of study. This article describes how to apply image-based (intrinsic) sorting of listmode scan projection images using the SkyScan Dataviewer software.

Biopharmaceutical Production: Rapid Contaminant Analysis of Cell Culture Media with TXRF

To ensure proper functioning of all physiological processes of cell cultures ex vivo, the natural environment of the cells must be imitated in defined media. Media often contains glucose, along with nutrient and trace elements to maintain cell health. The S4 T-STAR TXRF spectrometer can measure minute fluctuations in the composition of cell culture media, and help ensure the yield of bio-pharmaceutical product.

Geological Survey Using the D2 PHASER at the Mars Desert Research Station

The Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) in the Utah Desert, USA, hosts scientists studying past and future life conditions on our neighboring planet. In April 2017, a crew of 7 students from the Université Catholique de Louvain, Belgium, lived in the MDRS Habitation Module for 2 weeks. They collected geological samples from 7 locations and analyzed them with a D2 PHASER diffractometer. Their experiment established the potential of a D2 PHASER manned diffractometer someday visiting Mars!

Panning for Gold at the Denver X-Ray Conference, a Conference Review

This year's Denver X-ray Conference (DXC) was held July 31 to August 4 in Big Sky, Montana, USA. Bruker exhibited the newly released D2 PHASER – LYNXEYE XE-T, the S2 PUMA, and the M4 TORNADO. Providing hands-on demos on all 3 instruments to visitors, our Gold Nugget Challenge gave attendees a test sample containing predominantly "fool's gold" or real gold, and invited them to find out which theirs was! The fun continued with an ultimate prize drawing during our annual evening party.

High Speed Differentiation of Mineral Phases of Similar BSE Intensity with AMICS

This application note explains how Advanced Mineral Identification and Characterization System (AMICS) software can overcome difficulties in backscattered electron (BSE) signal segmentation to identify minerals. Minerals with similar BSE intensities, measured on a SEM in combination with a QUANTAX EDS system, could be effectively distinguished with AMICS’s unique advanced segmentation in particle mode.
