A Gold Mine of Information

This year's Denver X-ray Conference (DXC), hosted by the International Center for Diffraction Data (ICDD) from July 31 to August 4 in beautiful Big Sky, Montana, is only a few weeks away. Bruker will have a strong presence again, with 13 representatives covering the latest in XRD, XRF, micro-XRF, and handheld XRF solutions. Learn more at our exhibition booth (#34) or attend any of our 6 oral presentations and 4 poster presentations as part of the conference technical program.

Be sure to pick up your special entry for Bruker's Gold Nugget Challenge at the conference registration and bring it with you to our booth #34 to get hands-on experience with the D2 PHASER, S2 PUMA and M4 TORNADO. In addition to some educational and fun experiments, you may also hit the motherlode and win one of several gold-themed prizes!

Bruker’s annual party, a Gold Nugget blast this year, is open to all and will take place on Wednesday evening from 7-10 PM at the Lone Peak Pavilion, right behind the Snowcrest Lodge. Enjoy amazing views, free entertainment, great food and drink, and stick around to see if YOU strike it rich in our Gold Nugget Challenge final drawing.

D8 ADVANCE: In Operando Characterization of Lithium Batteries Using XRD

Lithium-ion batteries have started replacing nickel-metal hydride batteries in hybrid and electric vehicles. The cathode material has a major impact on the energy capacity and lifetime of these lithium batteries. This application note demonstrates the wealth of information that can be obtained from in operando characterization of cathode materials using a D8 ADVANCE X-ray diffractometer.

Determination of Ar, O, N, H and C, S by Gas Fusion Analysis and Combustion Methods

Non-metallic elements like C, S, H, O, N, and Ar influence the properties of metallic materials. These elements are present either in the powdered raw material or may be introduced during additive manufacturing processes. Combustion and inert gas fusion analytical methods, with the G4 ICARUS CS HF or G8 GALILEO ON/H, for example, offer a fast, reliable way to perform full elemental analysis for metal quality control.

Features of the Newest Version of CTVox

For SkyScan users who missed our annual microCT User Meeting in Belgium last month, this article provides highlights of the newest version of CTVox software. CTVox version 3.3 offers a transfer function editor for fast, flexible creation of images with vivid color and texture. Creating an RGB marker just got easier too. And when working with multiple volumes, you can now adjust the cutting/clipping mode. Examples are shown in corresponding Method Notes.

Art Conservation and Scientific Research Solutions: Art Conservator's Mobile Lab

Conservators at major museums requested a convenient solution for taking their spectrometry expertise on the road to help smaller museums and private collectors. In response, Bruker now offers an art conservator's mobile lab solution for non-destructive, non-contact elemental and compound analysis. Our portable XRF (TRACER 5i), handheld Raman (BRAVO), and portable FT-IR (ALPHA) analyzers work together to gather as much information as possible about works of art.

M4 TORNADO: Spatially Resolved Layer Thickness Analysis of Thin Metal Coatings

Manufacturers have to regularly check their coating processes and monitor coating thicknesses. Micro-XRF spectrometry with the M4 TORNADO makes short work of this common task. This lab report describes the analysis of a copper-aluminum layer on a glass substrate to determine layer thickness and the Cu:Al ratio across the sample. Full area scans (maps) were compared to single-point measurements and found to give identical layer thickness results.

Phase Identification and Distribution on a Mineralogical Sample

Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) combined with energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS) has evolved into a complete microstructural characterization method. Used for quantifying grain size, phase distribution, grain boundary analysis and phase identification, EBSD has become a standard tool in earth sciences. This application note shows how the QUANTAX EBSD system's Advanced Phase ID feature finds, identifies, indexes, and maps the phases in a complex sample of an oceanic oxide, gabbro.

PDF Analysis with the D8 ADVANCE

LiFePO4 is currently used in commercial Li-ion batteries, and new synthesis routes are constantly being developed to reduce battery cost. Defects in the crystal structure resulting from lower-cost synthesis methods can reduce the electrochemical properties of LiFePO4. Combined PDF (pair distribution function) and Rietveld refinements on the D8 ADVANCE are an effective tool for studying local defects, and ultimately guiding more effective synthesis routes.

Automated Goniometer Head for Optimized Sample Centering in SC-XRD

Bruker’s new Automated Goniometer Head (AGH) has been designed to allow fully automatic centering of magnetic-pin-mounted samples. A masterpiece of electronics and mechanical engineering, with a high level of miniaturization, precision, and reliability, the AGH eliminates the need for time-consuming manual adjustment to move the crystal to the center of the goniometer. On your D8 VENTURE or D8 QUEST with KAPPA goniometer, an AGH will make your sample get to the point!
