International Year of Soils

Happy new year! The United Nations and its Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) have designated 2015 as the International Year of Soils (IYS). With the aim of raising awareness of the importance of soil for food security, poverty relief and resource conservation, the IYS motto is "healthy soils for healthy life".

Coincidentally, our Product Manager for XRF in North America, Arkady Buman, recently met with Dr. Aicardo Roa-Espinosa, President of Soil Net LLC to advance the use of automated XRF for the elemental analysis of macro- and micronutrients in soil. Founded in 2002, Soil Net is based in Wisconsin and offers a range of polymer products for erosion control, water clarification and soil restoration. Soil Net's customers come from agriculture, construction, dairy farm, oil processing, fertilizer, ethanol and mining industries worldwide.

Soil Net purchased an S8 TIGER wavelength-dispersive XRF spectrometer in 2012 and is now collaborating with Bruker applications scientists in the development of a rapid and precise XRF quantitative analysis method for biomass, manure and soil. Compared with the traditional methods of AAS and ICP, XRF requires less sample preparation, is faster, and provides much better reproducibility. Soil Net hopes to develop a comprehensive set of standards, or certified reference materials, for soil. They also hope to establish XRF in their labs as the go-to method for monitoring biomass heavy metals and nutrients.

Be sure to dig in and get your hands dirty with the many conferences and celebrations coming up on the IYS Events List. We ♥ soil science!

2D-Mode for LYNXEYE XE
This XRD lab report describes the use of the LYNXEYE XE energy-dispersive detector and its innovative 2D scan mode for phase ID on a mine rock from Wausau, Wisconsin. The gamma profile of the 2D data revealed two crystalline phases, allowing peaks to be assigned to phases, and faster search/match.

Determination of Fe, Ti, Al, K and Ca in Quartz Sands by EDXRF
Quartz sand is a raw material essential to the production of glass. Concentrations of Fe, Ti, Al, K and Ca in the sand determine the properties of the glass. This XRF lab report shows the use of the S2 RANGER for accurately measuring <1% levels of these critical elements.
