About the course

This course is designed for new users of the Bruker D8 QUEST or D8 VENTURE systems for X-ray crystal structure determination (chemical crystallography). The course includes instruction, lab time and documentation. The training is in English, so participants should have strong English skills.

Course Agenda

This course runs 9am-5pm, Monday-Wednesday and covers the following:

  • Introduction to single crystal diffraction (crystal systems, space groups, X-ray diffraction theory)
  • Overview of instrument hardware and software
  • Techniques for selection and mounting of specimens for X-ray analysis
  • Discussion of data collection techniques and strategies
  • Hands-on use of a Bruker D8 series system for routine structure determinations
  • Instruction and practice with APEX3 software package, including
    • Data integration and analysis techniques using APEX3
    • Structure determination and refinement - use of SHELXTL software package
    • Use of Cambridge Crystallographic Database
    • preparation of final reports, tables, diagrams and CIF files

Course Fee

Course fee is $1,980 USD per person. Payment for the class per participant is due one month in advance.

Class size

Because our trainings are interactive and learner-oriented, we limit class size to a minimum of three and a maximum of six. Early enrollment is encouraged as registrations are accepted on a first-come/first-serve basis. We reserve the right to cancel a course if there are less than three registrants four weeks prior to the start date.

Our Facility

This Bruker AXS Training is at our Madison, Wisconsin location. It is about 12 minutes from downtown Madison and within walking distance of walking and bike paths, cafeterias and restaurants. At the facility participants can also tour our research labs, detector area and service areas.

 **Each participant will be provided with class materials and lunch daily. We have computers on-site, but it is encouraged to bring a laptop. It is highly recommended to fly into Madison (MSN) on Sunday afternoon/evening and fly out late Thursday evening or Friday morning to be able to attend the full course.
